BIOSCIENCES AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES COMMITTEE

MINUTES


Representative Tim Mahoney, Chair of the Committee, called the meeting to order at 10:03 AM on January 16, 2007, in Room 200 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Members present:

THISSEN, Paul

Members excused:
BEARD, Michael
MASIN, Sandra

A quorum was present.

Chair Mahoney called the meeting to order at 10:03AM.

Representative Peppin moved that the minutes of January 10, 2007 be adopted.
THE MOTION PREVAILED.

Dr. Frank Cerra, Senior Vice President for Health Services, and Dr. Tim Mulcahy, Vice President of Research, (University of Minnesota) provided an overview of the University of Minnesota's roles in the bioeconomy.

Dr. Steve Ekker, Asst. Professor of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development at the University of Minnesota described nanotechnology and its role as an emerging technology in the biosciences.

Dr. Arthur Erdman, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, provided an overview of the University's research role in bioscience including his work with the diagnostic stethoscope.
Chair Mahoney invited research staff to introduce themselves.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:27AM.
