MINUTES



Representative Carlos Mariani, Chair of the K-12 Education Policy & Oversight Committee, called the fourteenth meeting to order at 8:38 AM on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in the basement hearing room of the State Office Building.


The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll:

A quorum was present.

Chair Mariani welcomed the committee members, audience, and testifiers to the hearing, and gave an overview of the agenda for the day, week, and rest of session.

Chair Mariani reminded members to introduce any legislation they plan to have heard in the K-12 Education Policy & Oversight Committee as soon as they can, and to talk to Ms. Christina Gosack, Committee Administrator, about any legislation they have coming up.

Rep. McFarlane assumed the gavel at 8:41 AM.

Chair McFarlane introduced the hearing’s topic to members.

Rep. Doepke moved that the minutes of February 11, 2009 be adopted. THE MOTION PREVAILED. THE MINUTES WERE ADOPTED.

Ms. Laura Eckholm, Senior Vice President, L & M Radiator, and Mr. Steve Waters, Vice President of Sales, Marathon Multimedia testified on business’s perspective on education in Minnesota.

Mr. Chip Emery, retired CEO of MTS, and Mr. Dick Pentingill, CEO of Allina, testified on business’s perspective on education in Minnesota.

"Minnesota’s Future: World-Class Schools, World-Class Jobs" Report, Minnesota Business Partnership and the Itasca Project.

Mr. Mark Kline, Minnesota High Tech Association, and Vice-President of Consulting, Accelare, testified on business’s perspective on education in Minnesota.

Questions and discussion followed.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:03 AM.
