MINUTES


Representative Larry Howes, Chair of the Tourism Division, called the second meeting to order at 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2005, in Room 200 of the State Office Building.

The Clerk noted the roll.

A quorum was present.

Rep. Gazelka moved that the minutes from the meeting of January 20, 2005 be approved.
The motion prevailed.

Joe Carlson, from the Congress of Resorts, gave an overview of the purpose and goals of the Congress of Resorts.

Jennifer Bateman, owner of Two Inlets Resorts in Park Rapids, MN, gave testimony supporting legislation that would lengthen the resort season.

John Edman, Director of Minnesota Office of Tourism, gave an overview of the history of resorts in Minnesota and the economic impact that resorts have on their communities.

Mark Novotny, owner of Hyde-A-Way Bay Resort in Hackensack, MN, gave an overview of the Resort Preservation Task Force. Mr. Novotny also discussed zoning issues affecting Minnesota resorts and answered questions from members.

Ed Becker, owner of In-We-Go Resort in Nevis, MN, gave an overview of shoreline regulations and its effect on budget and taxes. He then answered questions from members.

Dave and Mary Keller, owners of Brookside Resort in Park Rapids, MN, gave testimony on the benefits of legislation that would prohibit schools from starting school before the Labor Day holiday.

Jerry Hammer, General Manager of the Minnesota State Fair, testified on the benefits of legislation that would prohibit schools from starting school before the Labor Day holiday.

Dave Thompson, owner of Fisherman’s Village Resort in Battle Lake, MN, gave an overview of the Minnesota State Fire Marshall’s office.

Joel Carlson, from the Congress of Resorts, testified on the preservation of Minnesota Resorts. Mr. Carlson gave an overview on proposing a delay for the property tax due date for resort owners. He then answered questions from members.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:51 p.m.
