      Prior to the convening of session, "Come Make a Home" and "God Bless America" were sung by the Northfield Youth Choirs - Governors' Choir under the direction of Elizabeth Shepley.

 

      The House of Representatives convened at 12:00 noon and was called to order by Steve Sviggum, Speaker of the House.

 

      Prayer was offered by the Reverend Lonnie E. Titus, House Chaplain.

 

      The members of the House gave the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

 

      Speaker Sviggum introduced the new House member, Representative Larry Haws from District 15B, and announced that he had previously been administered and subscribed to the oath of office on Thursday, January 19, 2006, and that his election certificate was on file.  He was elected in a special election held on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 to replace Joe Opatz, whose resignation was effective on Thursday, December 15, 2005.

      Paulsen moved that the House accede to the request of the Governor for a Joint Convention to hear the State of the State message of the Governor at 12:00 noon, Thursday, March 9, 2006; that the Chief Clerk be instructed to invite the Senate to meet in Joint Convention at 11:45 a.m.; that the Governor be advised accordingly; and that the Speaker appoint a committee of five members of the House of Representatives to act with a similar committee to be appointed by the Senate to escort the Governor to the Joint Convention.  The motion prevailed.

      Be It Resolved, by the House of Representatives of the State of Minnesota, the Senate concurring, that upon adjournment on March 2, 2006, the House of Representatives and Senate may each adjourn for more than three days.
