HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 20

 

A House resolution congratulating the University of Minnesota women's hockey team on winning the 2004 NCAA women's hockey championship.

 

 

Whereas, competitive sports at the collegiate level teach athletic skills, team work, sportsmanship, and leadership which will serve athletes well in the future, while providing tremendous enjoyment to dedicated and proud fans; and

 

Whereas, long denied the opportunity to participate in competitive sports, women have enthusiastically taken advantage of every sports opportunity offered them; and

 

Whereas, the tremendous popularity of women's athletics at the collegiate level encourages younger girls to participate in athletics and enhances their self-esteem; and

 

Whereas, the University of Minnesota women's hockey team participated in the 2004 NCAA Women's Frozen Four tournament in Providence, Rhode Island; and

 

Whereas, they defeated Harvard 6-2 in the final game of the tournament to win the NCAA championship; and

 

Whereas, the Gophers finished the season with an outstanding 30-4-2 record, and have been invited to the White House to meet the President; Now, Therefore,

 

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Minnesota that congratulations are extended to the members of the University of Minnesota women's hockey team for their accomplishments.

Be It Further Resolved that the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to prepare a copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the Speaker, and transmit it to the president of the University of Minnesota.
