Saturday's fishing opener will give legislative leaders and Gov. Tim Walz another chance to see each other as time begins to run short on the 2019 legislative session.

Whether talk will turn to the state’s budget as the governor and lawmakers cast their lines remains to be seen, but conference committees will need numbers soon if they are to finalize their budget bills in the next few days.

If no progress is made Saturday, House Speaker Melissa Hortman and Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka plan to meet with the governor Sunday evening to continue budget negotiations. Session must constitutionally end by May 20.

While we await further news, let’s look back at some of the stories you may have missed from the past week.
