'Starting Line:' Would you choose to pay more at the pump?

The idea of a gas tax increase to help pay for the state’s road and bridge infrastructure has floated around the Legislature for the past few sessions.

When Gov. Tim Walz proposed a 20-cent-per-gallon gas tax increase, strong opinions were heard on both sides of the issue. Some think it’s a fair way to pay for much needed repairs, but others scowl at the thought of an increase to the state’s 28.5-cents-per-gallon gas tax.

This week on Starting Line we learn more about a proposal put forth by Rep. Shane Mekeland (R-Clear Lake) that begs the question, “How would you feel about paying for a gas tax increase, if it was optional?” Mekeland sponsors HF2469 that could possibly lead to a compromise on the issue by creating an optional gas tax increase.
