JOINT HIGHER EDUCATION FINANCE AND POLICY DIVISION

MINUTES

Representative Bernardy, Chair of the House Higher Education Finance & Policy Division, called the meeting to order at 6:05 P.M. on February 18, 2019, in Room 200 of the State Office Building. A quorum was present.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Chair Bernardy moved to adopt the joint committee procedure. The motion PREVAILED.

Dan Wolter, Chair of the Regent Candidate Advisory Committee, gave a review of the RCAC prodedure.

Representative L. Carlson presented the Regents candidate recommendation from the Fifth Congressional District – Peggy Lucas.

Chair Anderson assumed the gavel.

The Regent candidates for the student position gave a two-minute presentation:
-James Farnsworth
-Mike Kenyanya
-Sarah Kettering
-Joshua Preston

No additional nominations were made.

The candidates sat for a 15-minute question-and-answer session.

Votes:
Farnsworth – 0 House, 0 Senate
Kenyanya – 13 House, 6 Senate
Kettering – 0 House, 0 Senate
Preston – 4 House, 3 Senate

Candidate Kenyanya received the majority vote and is recommended.

Chair Bernardy assumed the gavel.

The Regent candidates for the Fifth Congressional District position gave a two-minute presentation:
-Allison Barmann
-Peggy Lucas
-Janie Mayeron

Representative Gomez nominated Dr. Abdul Omari. Three House members and two Senate members approved by a show of hands. Dr. Abdul Omari was placed into nomination.

Omari gave a two-minute presentation.

The candidates sat for an 18-minute question-and-answer session.

First vote:
Barmann – 2 House, 1 Senate
Lucas – 7 House, 0 Senate
Mayeron – 3 House, 6 Senate
Omari – 5 House, 2 Senate

A majority vote was not received. Barmann was dropped from the ballot.

Second vote:
Lucas – 5 House, 1 Senate
Mayeron – 7 House, 6 Senate
Omari – 5 House, 2 Senate

A majority vote was not received. Lucas was dropped from the ballot.

Mayeron – 9 House, 7 Senate
Omari – 8 House, 2 Senate

Candidate Mayeron received the majority vote and is recommended.

Chair Anderson assumed the gavel.

The Regent candidates for the two At-Large positions gave a two-minute presentation:
-Lynn Abrahamsen
-Susan Adams Lloyd (via phone)
-Mary Davenport
-Kao Ly Ilean Her
-Bill Luther
-Sandy Wiese

Not present:
-Robert Eddy

Representative Gomez nominated Dr. Abdul Omari. Three House members and two Senate members approved by a show of hands. Dr. Abdul Omari was placed into nomination.

Omari gave a two-minute presentation.

The candidates sat for an 30-minute question-and-answer session.

Candidate Davenport received the majority vote and is recommended.

A majority vote was not received. Eddy and Lloyd were dropped from the ballot.

A majority vote was not received. Luther and Omari were dropped from the ballot.

Third votes:

Chair Bernardy called for a five-minute recess.

Chair Bernardy re-convened the meeting.

Fourth votes:
Her – 10 House, 4 Senate
Weise – 7 House, 5 Senate

A majority vote was not received.

Representative Poppe moved that the rules be suspended to forward two candidates. THE MOTION PREVAILS.

Representative Poppe moves to recommend candidates Her and Weise. THE MOTION PREVAILS.

Chair Bernardy adjourned the meeting at 8:51 P.M.
