Compromise on State Government, Elections Budget reached, House to hold informational hearing Thursday

Wednesday, June 23, 2021

St. Paul, MN - Tomorrow, the House State Government Finance and Elections Committee will hold an informational hearing on the compromise state government budget bill reached in negotiations with the Senate. Nonpartisan staff will provide a walk-through of the legislation authored by State Representative Michael V. Nelson, the chair of the committee.

“As we bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic, Minnesotans deserve a responsive state government, and our compromise budget ensures good governance can continue,” said Rep. Nelson. “In our negotiations, we were able to secure provisions upholding Minnesotans’ high standards for accessible elections, and also funded notable resources for our veterans.”

In addition to funding Minnesota’s constitutional offices and internal service agencies, investments in the final budget agreement include grants for local election administrators, additional staff for combatting wage theft, and funding for preventing veteran homelessness. Policy provisions in the bill formalize a process for absentee ballot drop boxes, and establish a Veterans Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day while also creating a restorative justice program for veterans.

The walk-through of the bill will take place tomorrow, June 24, at 8:30am. A spreadsheet of the investments included in the bill can be found here. The hearing will be livestreamed on House Public Information’s HTV2, which you can find here.
