Statement from Speaker Hortman and Majority Leader Winkler on mask requirement

Wednesday, July 22, 2020

St. Paul, Minnesota — Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler released the following statements on Governor Walz’s order requiring Minnesotans to wear a face covering in indoor businesses and indoor public settings.

“The science is clear: wearing a mask is one of the best things we can do to slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Speaker Hortman. “If Minnesotans want to keep each other safe, to have students in school, and to keep businesses open, we need to wear masks when we are in public places. Governor Walz's decision is wise and justified.”

“Wearing a mask is an easy way to protect our neighbors and friends, not a partisan purity test,” said Majority Leader Winkler. “We still need to do all we can to slow the spread of this virus and keep Minnesota from becoming the latest hotspot.”
