Statement from Speaker Hortman and Majority Leader Winkler on police-involved death in Minneapolis

Tuesday, May 26, 2020

St. Paul, Minnesota — Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler released the following statements:

“Words cannot fully convey the grief, disappointment, and pain across Minnesota today. This is disturbing, horrifying, heartbreaking, and something that simply should not have happened,” said Speaker Hortman. “George Floyd’s family and our communities of color deserve justice.”

“This video is chilling, inhumane, and very difficult to watch. As we all react to this horrific death, I hope we can think about everyone who lives in fear because they simply exist,” said Majority Leader Winkler. “Please try to understand their experience. Our shared humanity should bind us together, and make each of us feel responsible for the death of George Floyd. His death is our collective failure, and my heart goes out to Mr. Floyd's family and friends. We can never stop working to build a community dedicated to justice."
