Rep. Lesch drafting new legislation to protect domestic violence survivors in response to Court of Appeals decision striking down state law banning stalking-by-telephone

Wednesday, December 11, 2019

News of a Dec. 9 Minnesota Court of Appeals decision striking down a state law banning stalking-by-telephone is being met with calls for new legislative solutions. State Representative John Lesch (DFL-St. Paul), chair of the Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Division, announced today that he is already drafting legislation to be introduced at the start of the 2020 session to establish new protections for domestic violence survivors.

“I am already talking with community members and public safety leaders to build consensus around new solutions that protect victims of domestic violence and give prosecutors the tools they need to hold wrongdoers accountable,” said Rep. Lesch. “It is my intention to introduce a bill right away when next year’s session commences. The Legislature needs to get this right, and it’s extremely important that the voices of domestic violence survivors are at the forefront of this urgent conversation.”
