Rep. Wazlawik

Dear neighbors,

Our environment and natural resources are being threatened, but Minnesotans are coming together to preserve the things that make our state such a special place to live. It was great to see lots of familiar faces and some new ones at my environmental forum on Wednesday! We had a productive conversation about some of the environmental legislation that we passed in 2019 and how we can build on that success in the 2020 session.

If you weren’t able to make it, the handout from the forum is available here. I’d be happy to answer any questions and have a conversation!

Advocating for our Youngest Minnesotans

On Wednesday, I attended a lecture on the importance of early development from Dr. Judy Cameron, an expert on this topic. As a child care professional outside of the Legislature, one of my top priorities is making sure that public policy and investment keep up with the science on early childhood. Studies have shown that the vast majority of important brain development happens when children are very young. That means that the earliest years of a person’s life have a huge impact on the rest of it. If children don’t receive proper nutrition, care, and opportunities to learn, they are more likely to face challenges throughout their lives. However, the opposite is also true. If we invest in our youngest Minnesotans, they are more likely to succeed in school, in the workplace, and in their communities.

Dr. Cameron’s research is further evidence that every dollar spent on early child development leads to clear benefits for society. I’m looking forward to using what I’ve learned about brain development to advocate for more funding for early childhood initiatives!

Water Gremlin Public Meeting

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Department of Health, and Department of Labor and Industry are holding an open house to update community members on what’s happening at the Water Gremlin facility. Agency staff will provide information about Water Gremlin’s latest violations and what they’re doing to address them. There will be time for questions after their presentation, but residents should come early if they’d like to talk one-on-one with agency staff.

When: Wednesday, December 11 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. (There will be an informal open house at 6:30 p.m., followed by a presentation at 7 p.m.)

Where: Jimmy’s Event Center, 3565 Labore Road, Vadnais Heights, MN 55110

I’ll be taking a break from my regular updates next week to focus on spending time with my loved ones. I hope that you and your family are able to enjoy some quality time together as well!

Please feel free to share any questions or feedback you have and to forward this email on to others who may be interested in signing up for updates. You can reach me anytime at rep.ami.wazlawik@house.mn or 651-296-3018.
