RELEASE: Rep. Halverson Statement in Response to 2020 Health Insurance Rates

Tuesday, October 1, 2019

SAINT PAUL, MN — Today, the approved 2020 rates for Minnesota’s individual and small group health insurance plans were announced. Rep. Laurie Halverson (DFL – Eagan), Chair of the House Commerce Committee, released the following statement in response:

“Thousands of Minnesotans struggle to afford their insurance or don’t have the coverage they need due to high premiums and deductibles,” said Rep. Halverson. “We have taken action to help stabilize the individual insurance market, and now it’s time to implement long-term solutions to address the growing cost of health care. The underlying cost of health care is growing at 2.5 times the rate of inflation, which is being driven by the high costs of prescription drugs and other factors.”

“Addressing the root causes of out-of-control health care costs continues to be a top priority for House DFLers. In the House Commerce Committee, we’ll be working to address these issues next session by insisting on prescription drug price transparency; addressing the skyrocketing price of insulin and other lifesaving medications; ensuring adequate provider networks throughout the state, especially in Greater Minnesota; and tackling surprise emergency room billing.”
