Rules regarding the cleanup of spilled petroleum are part of a technical Department of Commerce law signed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty April 15.
Sponsored by Rep. Greg Davids (R-Preston) and Sen. Kevin Dahle (DFL-Northfield), the law clarifies that the Petrofund may be used to cover cleanup costs from tanker truck spills and how much can be spent on a site. Effective April 16, 2010, the law also allows the department to file an environmental impact lien on a Petrofund site, similar to the current authority of the Department of Agriculture and Pollution Control Agency.
