Child protection task force updated on work of agency, counties

A legislative task force tasked with overseeing efforts to overhaul the state’s child protection safety net discussed the process of updating screening guidelines and laid out an autumn work plan during a hearing Tuesday.

Representatives from the Department of Human Services briefed lawmakers on new draft child maltreatment screening guidelines during the Legislative Task Force on Child Protection meeting. County officials also updated the panel on their efforts to implement changes recommended earlier this year by the Governor’s Task Force on the Protection of Children.

The eight-member task force was created by the Legislature during the 2015 session to follow up on child protection recommendations the governor’s task force put forth in March. Sen. Kathy Sheran (DFL-Mankato) said group plans to meet each Tuesday through Nov. 10 and then resume meeting on Jan. 19, 2016.
