House approves close to $17,000 for annual claims bill

On its way to the governor is a bill that would pay out nearly $17,000 to settle claims against the state “for losses suffered while incarcerated in a state correctional facility or for injuries suffered by and medical services provided to persons injured while performing community service or sentence-to-service work for correctional purposes or while incarcerated in a state correctional facility.”

Sponsored by Rep. Duane Quam (R-Byron) and Sen. Jim Carlson (DFL-Eagan), HF2106/SF1973* was passed 128-0 by the House Sunday. The Senate passed the bill 60-0 May 13.

The largest award would be $9,685.30 to Bradley Post and his medical providers “for injuries to his back sustained while performing assigned duties in the Institution Community Work Crew Program in Nobles County.” Other payments range from to $750 to $2,560.

Funding would also cover $3,970.88 for 17 sentence-to-service and community work service injury claims under $500 and other claims already paid by the Corrections Department.

Each year, a joint House-Senate Subcommittee on Claims meets to determine which petitions will be funded. All state agencies are eligible to receive funding to cover the claims.
