Starting Line: Require students to stay in school until age 18?

All states have some form of a compulsory school attendance law that defines the minimum and maximum age in which a student must be enrolled and attend public school, or some equivalent education program.

With some exceptions, Minnesota law requires that every child between ages 7 and 17 receive instruction, unless the child has graduated.

This week’s Starting Line features a bill that would bump that age to 18.

Rep. Carlos Mariani (DFL-St. Paul) says his bill’s goal is to help prepare students for the real world when they leave high school.
