DNR may be option for online donor registration

Signing up as an organ donor could become easier after the House voted 130-0 Tuesday to require online applications for hunting and fishing licenses to also offer a donor enrollment option.

Sponsored by Rep. Sarah Anderson (R-Plymouth) and Sen. Tom Saxhaug (DFL-Grand Rapids) HF1182/SF1075* would direct the Department of Natural Resources to provide a link on its website to a federally designated organ procurement website that has information describing Minnesota laws regarding “anatomical gifts.”

Passed 56-0 by the Senate May 10, the bill now heads to the governor.

The bill would also require the DNR to provide and distribute information about organ and tissue donation and how to register as a donor.

While organ donors can now register when they renew their driver’s licenses, that must only be done every four years. Hunting and fishing licenses must be renewed annually, and Anderson said the bill could result in more men registering as donors.
