A conference committee has been called to seek middle ground between the Senate and House supplemental budget proposals.

Rep. Jim Knoblach (R-St. Cloud), who sponsors HF2749, successfully motioned Wednesday for the House to refuse to concur with the Senate amendments, sending the bill into conference committee. There are hundreds of pages of differences between the Senate and House versions of the bill, Knoblach said.

House Minority Leader Rep. Paul Thissen (DFL-Mpls) agreed that a conference committee was needed and encouraged the committee to consider the Senate’s proposals for higher education, early education and broadband funding – all areas in which the Senate has proposed spending significantly more than the House.

“I think the Senate is going the right direction in many of those places,” he said.

The House conferees are Knoblach, Rep. Jenifer Loon (R-Eden Prairie), Rep. Pat Garofalo (R-Farmington), Rep. Matt Dean (R-Dellwood) and Rep. Denny McNamara (R-Hastings). The Senate is also expected to appoint five conferees.
