The people of Minnesota are likely in for a grand celebration next year when the final touches on the State Capitol restoration are complete.

The House passed HF3110/SF2850* Thursday by a vote of 107-22 and sent the bill to the governor. It was passed 62-0 by the Senate March 30.

The bill directs the State Capitol Preservation Commission to develop and implement a plan to reopen the Capitol and “reintroduce” it to the citizens of the state.

Rep. Dean Urdahl (R-Grove City), who sponsors the bill with Sen. David Senjem (R-Rochester), said the celebration is planned to “welcome the people back to the people’s house,” and is tentatively planned for October 2017.

He said the bill would provide clarification to the fundraising process, which seeks to raise $400,000 from private sources, and would give clarity to how the money can be spent.

“The passage of this bill will allow the people of Minnesota to party like it’s 1905,” Urdahl said.
