RELEASE: Rep. Larry Kraft Introduces Bill to Create Climate Justice Curriculum in Schools

Friday, March 17, 2023

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - On Wednesday, the Minnesota House Education Policy Committee held a public hearing on HF 2297, authored by Rep. Larry Kraft (DFL – Saint Louis Park). The bill requires school districts and charter schools to provide climate justice education to all elementary, secondary, and state-approved alternative school students.

“When it comes to climate change, it is young peoples’ futures we need to be talking about,” said Rep Kraft. “I want to celebrate the work of the students who testified and helped to write this bill. They want to learn about climate change and its impacts on the most disadvantaged among us. Education reduces fear, gives us agency, and empowers us to take action and engage in our democracy.”

Students Amal Mohamed, Tahm Loyd, Libby Kramer, Rakiya Sheikhosman, as well as Climate Generation Youth Program Manager Ramiro Vasquez Jr., all testified in support of the bill.

The bill was laid over by the committee for further consideration. The Senate’s companion bill is awaiting its first hearing.
