NEWS RELEASE: Rep. Myers Statement on February Budget Forecast

Friday, March 1, 2024

SAINT PAUL – State Representative Andrew Myers, R-Tonka Bay, issued the following statement on the February Budget and Economic Forecast released Thursday:

“Thursday’s news shows the need for reasonable, balanced leadership at the legislature that can make investments in the priorities that matter most to suburban families, while also living within our means,” said Myers.

The February budget forecast showed a $3.7 billion surplus in 2025, but a $1.5 billion deficit beginning in 2026. The deficit is forecasted as if the surplus will not be spent, meaning any new spending bills passed in 2024 will further increase the deficit.

Myers continued, “With little to no rebate checks for the hard-working men and women of the suburbs, concerns regarding affordability, and the way most of the $18.5 billion surplus was spent, I have introduced legislation to provide property tax relief and rebate checks to Minnesotans across the state and am working to repeal the metro-wide sales tax increases that were enacted last year. We need to do more to make life affordable for seniors, young adults, and suburban families. These solutions are commonsense ways to put more money back into your budget and I am willing to roll up my sleeves and have those tough conversations to support our neighbors.”
