RELEASE: Rep. Nadeau Statement on Budget Forecast Showing Looming Deficit

Monday, December 11, 2023

St. PAUL— State Representative Danny Nadeau, R-Rogers, issued the following statement on the November Budget and Economic Forecast released last week showing a looming deficit in the next biennium.

“Last week’s budget forecast indicates again how out-of-balance it is in St. Paul. Now, more than ever, we need people to set aside political agendas and work together to make large-scale decisions that find balance and keep Minnesota moving forward.

“With an $18 billion budget surplus at the beginning of the year, Minnesotans rightfully expected the legislature to provide relief for the economic pressures they are facing while investing in ways to improve academic outcomes and decrease class size, lower childcare costs, tackle public pension challenges, and work to make our health care system more affordable. Minnesotans deserved to be heard and respected.

"Instead, the surplus was spent, taxes were raised another $10 billion, government spending grew by 40%, and now we face a projected deficit. This is ridiculous. Minnesotans are generous but they also deserve fiscal sanity and a prioritized approach that results in sustainable growth and prosperity.”
