Rep. Pérez-Vega Champions Pet Protection with Anti-Declaw Law

Wednesday, January 3, 2024

Saint Paul, Minn.- Minnesotans living in rental housing welcomed the new year with increased rights and protections thanks to a new package of tenant protection laws that went into effect on January 1st. These historic changes represent a significant victory for renters across the state, offering greater stability, fairness, and security in their homes. Notably, Rep. Pérez-Vega, a champion of animal welfare, spearheaded the inclusion of a provision in the bill package that prohibits landlords from forcing tenants to declaw or devocalize their pets. This ensures responsible pet ownership doesn't come at the cost of unnecessary procedures.

Representative María Isa Pérez-Vega (DFL-Saint Paul), a member of the Housing Committee, released the following statement:

“As a renter and dog owner, I'm proud to have led the charge on this issue. Declawing and devocalization are painful and unnecessary procedures that can have lasting negative impacts on animal welfare. This law recognizes that responsible pet ownership doesn't require compromising the health and well-being of our furry companions. No longer will families be forced to choose between their pets and a safe place to call home. In Minnesota, we believe pets enrich our lives and deserve humane treatment.”
