RELEASE: Rep. Sandra Feist Votes For, House Passes the Driver’s Licenses For All Bill

Tuesday, January 31, 2023

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, the Minnesota House passed HF 4, the Driver’s License for All bill, permitting undocumented immigrants to apply for driver’s licensure,  take a driver’s exam, and obtain a driver’s license. The bill restores driver’s license privileges removed in 2003. Rep. Sandra Feist (DFL - New Brighton) co-authored and voted for the legislation. The bill passed on a vote of 69-60.

“This bill exemplifies the type of legislation I dreamed of passing as an immigration attorney when I decided to run for office in 2020. This bill is an important step forward in ensuring that all immigrants in Minnesota feel supported and seen, and can fully participate in our society. Furthermore, it’s a great day for public safety - ensuring that everyone driving on our roads can provide identification, proof of training, and insurance. Today, I was overjoyed to vote in favor of Driver’s Licenses for All and uphold our neighbors' human dignity.”

The bill has garnered support from law enforcement, labor groups, chambers of commerce, agribusiness, faith-based organizations, and workers’ rights advocates. The Senate’s companion bill is being passed through its committees, and Gov. Walz has signaled he will sign the bill into law.
