Legislative Update: New Laws Take Effect August 1

Neighbors,

On August 1, a new slate of laws will go into effect. New laws range from making it more difficult to sell stolen catalytic converters, to criminalizing creation of sex-related deep fake activity, to requiring firearms background checks. Other laws will also take effect, including measures related to bicyclists, and worker safety, as well as several items related to the legalization of adult-use cannabis.

Solidarity with workers

Yesterday, I was joined by Sen. Frentz and Rep. Brand on the picket line in solidarity with United Steel Workers from Dotson Iron Castings. The workers shared stories about very dangerous working conditions and long work weeks, and about injuries and burns sustained on the job. Employees are demanding a wage to match the hazardous nature of their jobs, safer working conditions, and increased safety training.

August 15 deadline to file for your property tax refund

The filing deadline for your 2022 property tax refund is Tuesday, August 15. You can find more information by going to the Minnesota Department of Revenue website here.

Farmfest

Next week, our robust agricultural community will be highlighted during the three-day Minnesota Farmfest in Redwood Falls. This is an excellent showcase, educational event, and an opportunity to hear from producers, lawmakers and those who work in the industry. You can learn more here.
