Legislation to add personal finance course to high school graduation requirements receives first committee hearing

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Yesterday, the House Education Policy Committee passed legislation to introduce a personal finance class as a graduation requirement in Minnesota high schools. The bill is authored by Rep. Hodan Hassan (DFL – Minneapolis).

“When we fail to equip students with basic life skills, we put them on an impossible path of having to struggle for success,” said Rep. Hassan. “A lack of financial literacy creates a hardship on young Minnesotans as they become adults and go through a major life transition to independence. Additionally, for Minnesotans who come from low-income households, a lack of understanding of financial basics leads to unknowingly making poor financial decisions, limiting social mobility and feeding the cycle of generational poverty. Giving our kids the tools and resources they need to navigate personal finances will help them take the first step in building a brighter future.”

HF 651 has been referred to the Education Finance Committee.
