Dear Neighbors,

Happy New Year! I hope your new year is off to a nice (and warm!) start.

As cold weather sets in, I want to share a quick reminder that Minnesota’s “cold weather rule” is now in effect, which protects residents from having their electric or natural gas service shut off until April 30.

Cold Weather Rule

To ensure your service is safe from disconnection, you must make and keep a payment plan that you and your utility provider agree on. More information is available on the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s website.

I also want to share an important new note for renters. Last year, the DFL-led trifecta passed new tenant protection laws, one of which being a guaranteed minimum temperature. Landlords are now required to maintain a minimum temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit in rental units. This essential provision protects tenants from dangerous and uncomfortable living conditions during our harsh winters.

The popularity of heat pumps is also gaining momentum in Minnesota! They’re saving families money, lessening greenhouse gas emissions, and helping grow a greener and cleaner economy. Minnesota Public Radio did a great story last month on the benefits and growing popularity you can check out here

If you’re interested in seeing a comprehensive list of all the laws we passed last session, you can check out the nonpartisan office of House Public Information’s overview here

Community Coffee Hour January 20th

Warm up with a cup of coffee and join me and our neighbors for the first community coffee hour of the year on Saturday, January 20th. We’ll gather at Dunn Bros on Galaxie Avenue in Apple Valley at 9:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to share their thoughts and input about the last legislative session and what they hope legislators can achieve when session starts February 12th.
