The week started with a couple exciting announcements from Governor Walz, and went on to include a few updates on bills.
Gov. Walz, Lt. Gov. Flanagan Visiting Minnesota Communities to Talk Education
Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan this week launched a four-day statewide tour to highlight their historic education proposal. From the high school where the governor taught in Mankato to Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead, Walz and Flanagan are traveling across the state to speak with educators, students, and school administrators about the critical need to invest in education. Commissioners are also participating in public gatherings to highlight the administration’s proposed investments in education.
One Minnesota Path to Clean Energy
On Monday, Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced their One Minnesota Path to Clean Energy – a set of policy proposals that will generating 100 percent clean energy by 2050 in Minnesota’s electricity sector. Similarly to HF 700, which is sponsored by Rep. Long, this proposal transitions Minnesota away from power sources that rely on fossil fuels in favor of renewable sources like wind and solar.
Xcel Energy and 3M are among the companies that have already announced that they are committed to generate 100 percent of their electricity from clean energy by 2050. Additionally, two states (California and Hawaii) have adopted plans to reach 100 percent clean energy. This is a plan that is achievable and necessary if we want to prevent further damage to our environment.
I am very grateful that Governor Walz has demonstrated he is committed to stopping the harmful effects of climate change.
Expansion of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
This week, I introduced a bill that will help us save the environment, while we enjoy the environment. My bill would allocate funding for new electric vehicle charging stations in state and regional parks. This is one small way we can address and slow climate change and more broadly, support our goal clean energy goals for the future.
