Legislative Update - January 21, 2019

Monday, January 21, 2019

Hello Neighbors and Friends of District 40B,

With excitement, it is my pleasure and honor to be officially sworn in as your State Representative. From the holidays to swearing in, and from the shuffling of desks to pounding nails into walls, the halls are bustling with the sounds of the legislature. I am ready and energized to start doing the work of the people, representing you at the Capitol.

For the 2019-2020 legislative session, I am happy to announce the work and initiatives I have begun during our first two weeks in session. I have been designated Vice Chair of Property Taxes, and am a member of the Capital Investment, Agricultural Policy and Finance, and Higher Education Policy and Finance committees.

I co-authored several bills that would strengthen communities across the state and increase economic prosperity for Minnesotans. The first bill would support families with paid sick and safe time. We should all be able to take time from work when we need to care for our loved ones, and that’s exactly what this bill demands.

It also means improving access to and reducing the cost of healthcare. Thousands of Minnesotans struggle to afford health insurance or worse, go without it. Everyone deserves healthcare and it’s something we all need at some point in our lives. I co-authored a bill to give Minnesotans an affordable insurance option by allowing them to buy into MinnesotaCare.

I also co-authored a bill to invest in our schools and early childhood development. Early childhood education is the best way to make sure all children start off on a path to educational success. Child care programs and community partnerships can make all the difference for families struggling to get ahead.

This is just some of the work that I have been doing at the Capitol to advocate for our growing community – to increase equity in education, strengthen economic development, and make sure all Minnesotans have access to affordable healthcare.

My staff and I want to thank you for your patience as we work hard to follow up with each and every one of you. We value your input and want to hear from you. You are my first priority.
