Legislative Update: February 24, 2023

Friday, February 24, 2023

Neighbors,

This week has brought with it a massive snowfall. Although not quite as significant as originally expected, I hope you all have had a warm and safe week!

Here is an update from Saint Paul. ??

Banning Conversion Therapy

This week the Minnesota House passed a ban on conversion “therapy.” Conversion “therapy” includes a range of dangerous and discredited practices aimed at changing a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Conversion “therapy” is not therapy at all — it’s been denounced by every mainstream medical and mental health association, including the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. This legislation prevents teens and young adults from being coerced into treatments that are ineffective and lead to depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, and even suicide. It also seeks to help prevent parents from being taken advantage of by deceptive agents of the conversion “therapy” industry. This bill will change lives, improve lives, and save lives.

Legalizing Sports Betting

On Tuesday I joined my DFL colleagues to announce a new push to legalize sports betting in Minnesota.

It’s pretty simple: in 2018, the United States Supreme Court ended the federal ban on states legalizing sports betting. Since then, 30 states, including every state bordering Minnesota, have legalized the practice. Minnesotans have been waiting a long time for the opportunity to engage in fair sports betting. I have continued to listen to and consult with the 11 sovereign tribal nations, our professional sports teams, the University of Minnesota, experts on problem gaming  and other stakeholders over the last few years to ensure the best outcome for Minnesotans. Our bill is a step in the right direction to ensure consumer protection while engaging in sports betting.

Honest Accounting Becomes Law

Minnesotans deserve and expect honest budgeting, and nothing less. That’s why I authored legislation to account for inflation in state budget forecasts. This bill fixed a budget gimmick adopted several decades ago for political reasons. Just as any family has to account for inflation when putting together their family budget, Minnesota should account for inflation in its state budget.

This bill passed the House in January and Governor Walz signed it this week.
