Legislative Update- February 8, 2019

Friday, February 8, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

I hope this finds you well. It’s been another busy week! A lot of bipartisan proposals are moving through committees. Check them out below.

Clean Energy Efforts

This past week saw some exciting advances in efforts to tackle climate change. As Minnesotans, we are fortunate to live in such a beautiful state, with so many national parks and bodies of water to enjoy. My family and I love spending time in the Boundary Waters in the summertime.  Unfortunately, we are experiencing some of the extreme weather that accompanies climate change. We need to make changes soon if we want to prevent irreversible damage. This is why bills like HF 700 are important. The bill was heard for the first time on Tuesday, and it’s starting to move through committees. If passed, it would increase the proportion of energy that must come from renewable sources and set target dates to reach those goals. Minnesota is endowed with many renewable resources, and investing in them would create jobs and slow climate change.

The Star Tribune wrote an article with visuals of how policy changes such as these would help  to save our forests. You can read it here.

Prescription Drugs

Thousands of Minnesotans struggle with health care they need, but can’t afford, and this is often because the price of their prescriptions increase dramatically. This week in the Health and Human Services Committee, we held a public hearing on a bill that will hold drug companies accountable for their part in the high price of some drugs. One of these bills will eliminate price gouging. As a physician, this bill is very important to me. Patients should not be forced to forgo or ration their medicine because of unreasonably high prices.

There is no one “magic bullet” that will fix our health care challenges. All Minnesotans deserve affordable health care and we have to start working toward that goal.  This bill would be a significant step towards making health care more affordable for everyone.

SAVE THE DATE- Listening Sessions on February 23

I have rescheduled two listening sessions and I would love to see you there! You can find the details here.

Constituent Spotlight

It was great to meet Patty Wuensch this week, who honored her late mom by lobbying for protections in long term care settings. I’m grateful for her advocacy.  Protections for our cherished loved ones is a priority this session.
