Legislative Update - The Final Weeks of Session

Friday, April 30, 2021

Rep. Lippert

Dear Neighbors,

This week, we passed our Health and Human Services budget, the final component of our House budget proposal. Whether it’s lowering the price of prescription drugs, paving the way for a public option, or delivering resources to those experiencing homelessness, our Health and Human Services Budget is investing in the care and support Minnesotans need to make it through this pandemic and thrive after it ends. I’m especially proud of the provisions to support our Personal Care Assistants. These are the Minnesotans who help older adults and people with disabilities live with dignity and survive from day to day, and this bill would stabilize the PCA workforce by raising their wages now, and support a living wage in the future.

HHS

With all our proposals off the House floor, our focus now turns to conference committees, where House and Senate members will work to craft consensus legislation on a final budget bill for their assigned area. I’m honored to share that I’ve been appointed to the Agriculture Conference Committee, and even though this is typically one of the most bipartisan components of the budget, there are still some important differences to work on to ensure we’re delivering a bill that adequately meets the needs of Minnesotans.

With session ending on May 17, we’ll be spending the next few weeks in negotiations, culminating in us passing our final budget bills off the House floor one last time. As one of the only divided state legislatures in the nation, it’s up to us to prove that governing can still get done through hard work and compromise.

REAL ID

In a recent announcement from the Federal Government, the deadline to obtain a REAL ID has been extended by an additional 18 months to May 3, 2023. This will help relieve some of the pressure on our local Driver and Vehicle Services offices, which have been overwhelmed with requests to renew expired drivers licenses and vehicle registration tabs, and give Minnesotans more time to obtain this updated form of identification.

REAL ID

Beginning May 3, 2023, Minnesotans will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. An enhanced driver's license or ID card, passport or passport card are acceptable substitutes.

2020 Census

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our community to stand up and be counted, Minnesota not only led the nation in self-reporting, but our congressional district even beat out the Minnesota average with 75.8% of us participating in self-reporting. This was not only instrumental in ensuring our state kept all eight of its congressional districts, but better enables our communities get the resources they deserve.
