Rep. Jeff Brand votes to pass HF 28, the “Restore the Vote” Act

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Tonight, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted to pass HF 28, known as the “Restore the Vote” Act, off the House floor. The bill would restore voting rights to individuals convicted of a felony upon completion of any incarceration imposed and executed by a court for the offense. Rep. Jeff Brand (DFL – Saint Peter) is a co-author on the bill and voted to support it.

“There’s no reason someone who has served and completed their time should continue to be disenfranchised,” said Rep. Brand. “This is an important step in mitigating the effects of a broken criminal justice system. Twenty-one other states, both red and blue, restore voting rights as soon as incarceration ends, and I’m glad that Minnesota will bring that number up to twenty-two.”

In the Senate, the bill is making its way through committee hearings.
