Legislative Update (June 3, 2016)

Friday, June 3, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

Thanks for your correspondence since we finished up session. I’ve enjoyed hearing your opinions and answering your questions. There’s still a couple items left to be decided, but I’m happy with a number of the provisions we’ve already passed into law.

Veteran Tax Relief

Governor Dayton signed the supplemental budget bill earlier this week. Contained in this language was a provision to exempt retired veterans’ benefits from state income tax. Prior to this bill, we were one of just a few states to fully tax the retirement of our veterans. I’m proud to vote for a provision that will give around 18,000 retired service men and women a break on their taxes; they deserve it.

Bill Signed Into Law

As a legislator in their first term, it can be difficult to move legislation all the way to the governor’s desk for a signature. Fortunately, one of my first bills, HF3175, unanimously passed the House, and was signed into law by the governor. The bill provides increased safety measures for driving instructors by strengthening how criminal background checks are received before issuing an instructor license. It’s encouraging to see common sense ideas become law to help Minnesotans.

Pending Legislation

Although the House passed a tax bill and a bonding/transportation bill, neither have been signed into law. Legislative leaders are communicating with the governor to see if we can work to complete these bills to help Minnesotans.

With a couple items left to discuss, it’s still important for you to call or email and share your opinion. Please contact my office, and I’ll be sure to get back to you.

Enjoy your weekend,
