Legislative Update (May 26, 2016)

Thursday, May 26, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

I just finished up my first legislative session, and am extremely grateful for the experience of representing the people of Bloomington. I want to make sure you’re updated on how things ended over the weekend.

Middle-Class Tax Relief

Even before my time in office, I heard from friends and neighbors about a need for middle-class tax relief. As our state has a $900 million surplus, we know many people have been paying too much on their taxes. Over the weekend, the House and Senate passed a plan to provide $800 million of relief for middle-class families, small business owners, military veterans, and recent college graduates.

In the proposal, $150 million is set to go to the working family tax credit, while another $32 million is used to expand the childcare tax credit. ALL small businesses in our state will see a reduction after we repealed part of a harmful statewide property tax. $13 million will go to military veterans income tax exemption, and over $100 million will go toward a student loan tax credit. I hope the governor will sign this bill into law; it’s a plan to give back to those who need it.

Bonding and Transportation

Late Sunday evening, the House passed a transportation and bonding plan to invest $700 million in roads and bridges throughout the state. Unfortunately, the Senate tried to add an amendment to fund Southwest Light Rail, and the bill died after our midnight deadline. What’s disappointing is this bill would have helped our area significantly. By choosing to play political games, the Senate stifled the bill and prevented funding from going to local projects around the state including my bill for $8.75 million for the Mall of America Transit Station. There’s a chance we’ll have a special session to pass this bill again, and I’ll continue to advocate for projects to benefit our area.

Thank You

I can’t thank you, the people of Bloomington, enough for the opportunity to be your voice at the Capitol. Daily I’m humbled by this honor, and truly value your support. Again, thank you.

Although session is finished, I hope you’ll continue to contact me with any questions or concerns. I always enjoy hearing from you, and can’t wait to chat about any issue that’s important to you or your family.

Best,
