Legislative Update (March 24, 2016)

Thursday, March 24, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

We’re quickly approaching the 2016 legislative session’s first deadline for committee hearings. The good news is a number of my first bills have been gaining traction and working their way through the process.

35W-494 Interchange Bill

Recently, I introduced a bill to start to design, engineer, and reconstruct the 35W-494 interchange near our area. This interchange is one of the most congested sections of highway in our state. Like many Bloomington residents, I’ve driven on it countless times and understand we need improvements. My bipartisan bill allocates $85 million to help fix this problem and assist those who frequently use the interchange. This improvement is part of a phased redesign of the entire 35W-494 interchange, and a step in the right direction for improving this roadway. A project this large can’t happen overnight, but I look forward to being your voice in St. Paul to advocate for this bill.

Bill Hearings

Yesterday, I presented my first two bills in committee. In the Aging and Long Term Care Policy Committee, I presented my bill, HF3350, to further study ways to improve elderly care in Minnesota. We have a growing number of senior citizens in Minnesota, and must stay in front of aging care issues.

In the Transportation Committee, I presented my bill, HF3175, regarding background checks for driving instructors. This legislation passed out of committee and is headed to Civil Law and Data Practices. Thank you to Katie Engler and Don Hoechst for testifying in favor of the bill. I can’t wait to support HF3175 this session, and hope we can get it to the governor’s desk to sign.

Constituent Meetings

The first couple weeks of session are great for sitting down and chatting with neighbors from Bloomington. I recently met with constituents from the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association, Building Trades, and the Golf Superintendents Association. I love listening to your questions, and am always open to discussing what’s important to you.

Let’s Connect

I mentioned last week I’m holding some meet-and-greets throughout this session. The first meeting is Saturday, April 2 at Mugshots Coffee in Bloomington. I’ll be there from 10:30 am until noon; I hope to see you!

If you haven’t already, be sure to follow me on Twitter here and like my Facebook page here. It’s a great way for me to keep you in the loop, and for us to easily interact.

As always, please continue to contact me with any questions or concerns. I enjoy hearing your viewpoint, and encourage you to call, email, or visit whenever you’re free.

Have a great weekend,

Chad
