Legislative Update (March 3, 2016)

Thursday, March 3, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

We’re just a few days from the start of my first legislative session, and I’m anxious to get going. I’ve heard from many of you and hope you’ll continue to contact me.

Budget Surplus

Last week, economists from Minnesota Management and Budget revealed their budget forecast for fiscal years 2016-2017. We learned our state faces a $900 million surplus; somewhat lower than the projection of $1.2 billion in early December.

The good news is our state has the money we need to fund roads and bridges and provide tax relief without raising taxes on Minnesotans. Last year, lawmakers couldn’t come to a compromise on transportation, so we’ll pick up the bill this session. With a shorter session, we need to focus on areas where both parties agree. Repairing and expanding our roads and bridges is something everyone, regardless of ideology, can agree with. As a member of the Transportation Policy and Finance Committee, working toward a transportation compromise without raising taxes is one of my primary focuses in my first term.

Along with transportation funding, providing tax relief for hardworking, middle-class families is also a goal of mine for 2016. The surplus is an opportunity to put more money back in the pockets of Minnesotans. I plan to support the 2015 tax proposal that eased the tax burden on senior citizens, recent college graduates, military veterans, and small business owners.

Bloomington Chamber of Commerce Event

Tomorrow, I’m taking part in the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce 2016 Legislative Preview. Please Contact Me

The main reason I ran for office was to serve the people in my community. I’ve been a Bloomington resident for almost my entire life, and I deeply care for the well-being of our area. Although the Capitol building is closed for construction, I’d encourage you to call or email to set up an appointment at my office in the State Office Building. I’ll always find time for the people of Bloomington, and can’t wait to hear your ideas and suggestions.

Have a great weekend!

Chad
