REP. RARICK CONGRATULATES AREA FARM FAMILY OF THE YEAR RECIPIENTS

Friday, August 7, 2015

ST. PAUL – Minnesota's 'Farm Families of the Year' were unveiled by the University of Minnesota at Farmfest recently, and State Representative Jason Rarick (R-Pine City) is congratulating this year's local recipients.

"Agriculture is the backbone of Minnesota's economy, and these families continue to make positive contributions not only to the industry but to their communities," Rarick said. "I congratulate them for receiving this award and wish them continued success."

Home Place Dairy has received the award for Pine County this year. Nathan and Suzanna Nelson are now the main operators of the dairy farm, which was started in the 1930's, but Nathan's father Howard also remains very active as he transitions into retirement. Along with dairy and beef cattle, a mix of corn, soybeans, oats and alfalfa are also raised on the farm. The Nelson’s daughters Leah, Esther, Ruthie and Johannah also raise about 50 laying hens.

Kanabec County's recipients are Jim and Debbie Morrison of Sapsucker Farms. Their produce farming operation began with a garden, followed by maple syrup production from their trees and then an apple orchard. Today their certified organic operation has grown to include fruits and vegetables, honey bees, mushrooms, maple syrup, laying hens and apples.

80 families throughout Minnesota received the award this year.
