The Abortion Debate

Friday, September 24, 2021

These last few weeks have generated a lot of conversation about abortion. During my time in the Minnesota Legislature, I have consistently introduced legislation known as the “Heartbeat Bill.” My bill will protect unborn children and save lives. Since the Texas abortion bill went into effect, the Democrats and I have had several exchanges on this issue.

Here are a few examples: https://kstp.com/politics/minnesota-abortion-rights-advocates-sound-alarm-over-new-laws/6245062/

Despite the Democrats’ attacks on me and my bill, I remain undeterred. In fact, I am reinvigorated. While Governor Tim Walz has made clear that he has no intention of signing the “Heartbeat Bill” into law, I want to stress the importance of having this conversation. I am more than willing to sit down with any elected official and start a real discussion about human life.

As we move forward, know that I am totally committed to protecting all life. As legislators, we vote on many topics here in St. Paul. We make changes to agriculture policy, vote on transportation investments, and put together state budgets. However, no issue is more important than the discussion around human life. This debate strikes at the very heart of what it means to be human and made in God’s image.

What is not helpful is profanity, name-calling, and attempts to use this issue to raise money. Unfortunately, so many groups are using this issue to line their pockets and grow their network of fundraising contacts. To so many, this issue is personal, and those who manipulate it for their own gain should be ashamed.

Frankly, I think the reason why an honest conversation on this issue hasn’t occurred is because pro-choice advocates of abortion don’t want to have this debate. They know that the reality of abortion is too horrific to defend. They do not want to pull back the curtain and show the world just how evil abortion is. In turn, pro-choice forces intentionally keep the debate at arm’s length and try to keep the public from looking deeper.

We cannot ignore this issue any longer, and we must not be satisfied to simply tread water for years to come. I look forward to the vigorous debate.

In the last week, so many of you have reached out to me and voiced your support of the “Heartbeat Bill” and other pro-life efforts. Thank you so much for joining this mission. Your dedication and steadfast defense of life is truly the Lord’s work.
