Minnesota State Representative Tim Miller (R- Prinsburg) made the following statement in response to the announcement of the closure of the Del Monte plant in Sleepy Eye. Approximately 370 employees will be laid off, in groups, as the packing season finishes in October.
Rep. Miller said “this is a terrible loss for a mainstay of the central Minnesota economy. That single plant provided good seasonal and full-time jobs for the surrounding communities for almost ninety years. To see it come to an abrupt end is a real loss and should tell us something about how the agricultural industry is struggling in Minnesota.”
He concluded: “I hope that the plant can be sold to another business so that those jobs can be replaced.”
Rep. Tim Miller (R- Prinsburg) represents district 17A, which is just north of Sleepy Eye.
