Legislative Update from Rep. Yvonne Selcer

Thursday, February 6, 2014

Dear Neighbors,

In the last legislative session we made great strides in getting Minnesota back on track.  I authored House File 1, the legislation to pay back the $2.8 billion owed to our schools, and we did just that, using an accelerated payment method that did not raise taxes.  When my bill (HF 1) was incorporated into the Omnibus K-12 Education bill last session, it made certain that our state surplus would go to pay our schools first.  We balanced the budget without shifts and gimmicks, and our state’s credit rating is again on the upswing.  I came to the legislature to make sure Minnesota is paying the bills on time.

We closed corporate tax loopholes to level the playing field and reduce the deficit.  We expanded the loan pool for small businesses, and are working on ensuring that our community members are trained for the good paying career opportunities that are becoming available as businesses again expand.  We also finished our work on time.

However, there is more work to be done.  We need to work to streamline government rules and regulations so that new businesses have an easier time getting started, and our existing businesses can concentrate on growing and creating new jobs.  As a member of the bi-partisan House Small Business Caucus, I have spent a great deal of time since the last legislative session touring businesses, and listening to business owners’ concerns.  I invite you to join in the conversation, and contact me with ideas you have to streamline government regulations that may stymie business growth.  I always want to hear the good ideas from my community.  You can reach me at 651-296-3964 or rep.yvonne.selcer@house.mn

I enjoyed recently meeting with the community members living at Beacon Hill and Glen Lake Landing in Minnetonka.

Many of you have been talking about Minnesota being ranked one of the top two states in the US in Politico Magazine last week.  They rounded up fourteen different state rankings from reliable sources such as the Census Bureau, the FBI, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on quality-of-life factors such as high school graduation rates, per capita income, life expectancy, and crime rates.  We can all be proud that Minnesota ranked #2 out of the 50 states!  I invite you to work with me this next legislative session on making that ranking #1.  Our community members deserve no less.  If you’d like to read more about it, click here.

It was great to chat with Dean Edstrom at the Eden Prairie Chamber Luncheon. He's been involved with the Eden Prairie Chamber for many years.

As always, thank you for the honor of being your voice at the state capitol.

Sincerely,

Yvonne Selcer
