State Rep. Mary Sawatzky Sworn In as Legislative Session Begins

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN - State Representative Mary Sawatzky (DFL - Willmar) was officially sworn in as the District 17B State Representative as the 88th Legislative Session convened at noon on January 8th  at the State Capitol. Rep. Sawatzky is beginning her first term in the Minnesota House of Representatives serving Willmar, New London, Atwater, Kandiyohi, Spicer, and Pennock.

“Our state is facing a number of challenges," said Rep. Sawatzky. “People expect their elected officials to listen to their communities, work together, and focus on the basics to grow our economy for the middle class and improve our schools so kids across the state have access to a world-class education. That is what I’ll be focusing on during my term.”

Economic forecasts revealed early last month that lawmakers must tackle a $1.1 billion budget shortfall this year. When the money still owed to schools and inflation is included the shortfall rises to over $3 billion.

“Even with these challenges, I am confident that if we’re willing to work together and listen to the people of Minnesota, we can set clear priorities, balance the budget responsibly, and continue working on getting our economy back on track,” added Rep. Sawatzky. “

Recognizing the difficult task ahead in balancing the state budget, Rep. Sawatzky signaled a desire to work in a bipartisan fashion on a solution.

“I plan on working with legislators no matter which side of the aisle they are on,” said Rep. Sawatzky. “In my opinion, that’s the best way to responsibly solve our state budget deficit and put Minnesota back on the path to economic prosperity.

Much of that work will begin in legislative hearings throughout the coming weeks and months. Rep. Sawatzky will serve on the Education Policy, State Government Finance and Veterans Affairs, and Transportation Policy Committees.

“I’m very excited to be assigned to these important committees and for the opportunity to help shape legislation on issues that are important to our district,” said Rep. Sawatzky.

Throughout the legislative session, Rep. Sawatzky encourages all constituents to contact her directly with any questions, comments, or concerns on any legislative issue. Rep. Sawatzky can be reached by phone at (651) 296-6206 or by email at rep.mary.sawatzky@house.mn.
