Irondale High School's Early College Program Deserves Praise

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

To the editor:

At a time when state governments across the country are cutting investments in our children’s education, it’s important to commend schools that are using innovative outside-the-box strategies to provide our students with the very best educational opportunities.

Irondale High School is one of those schools.

At an Education Policy Committee hearing last week, representatives from Irondale High School touted their Early College program. In partnership with Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Irondale is the first school in our state to offer a comprehensive program that allows students to potentially earn an Associate Degree by the time they graduate from 12th grade.

The program has earned the praise of U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan and recently received a prestigious Local Government Innovation Award given by the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

As members of the Education Policy Committee, we look forward to working with a broad array of communities and stakeholders to put forward innovative ideas to better prepare our kids for success just like Irondale High School is doing.

Starting with paying back the money we owe our schools, we believe this legislative session will produce reforms and legislation that will mean brighter futures for our children and a stronger economic foundation for our state.

Sincerely,

State Representative Jason Isaacson (DFL-Shoreview)
