REP. DORHOLT RESPONDS TO DFL HOUSE BUDGET TARGETS

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN—Today, House DFL Leaders announced their budget framework.  The proposed budget closes the $627 million deficit and provides structural balance into the future.

“Balancing the budget fairly and responsibly is the number one task of the legislature,” said Rep. Dorholt (DFL-St. Cloud).  “We need to stop the cycle of deficit-to-deficit budgeting, gimmicks and borrowing in order to be serious about solving our state’s fiscal problems into the future.”

The new proposal fully pays back the $854 million owed to Minnesota schools and invests an additional $700 million in education.

“It is encouraging to see a budget proposal that fully pays back our schools,” said Rep. Dorholt. “Education is what has made our state a leader and what will help us continue to lead.  Paying back our schools and providing new investments in early childhood through higher education will ensure Minnesota’s economic security into the future.”

The budget invests $1 billion in economic growth reforms, including $250 million in property tax relief and $46 million in job creation.

“Growing new jobs and boosting Minnesota’s economy is the best way to bounce back fully from the recession,” commented Rep. Dorholt.  “Investing in jobs, infrastructure and education will grow the middle-class.  I look forward to working on these proposals to strengthen our state by closing the budget gap, ending the cycle of government borrowing, and moving Minnesota into the future.”
