2013 Session Update

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Dear neighbor,

Governor Dayton has signed Medical Assistance Expansion.  This is the first bill to pass the House and Senate and be signed into law this session.  Check out the link to my first video update below, and please contact me with any issues you’d like me to bring up in my future updates.

This week, I have introduced a bill to promote the use of open textbooks in colleges and universities throughout the state.  Open textbooks are licensed under an open copyright license and are available online and in print for use by students and faculty at little to no cost.

Students are spending anywhere from $300-$800 per semester on reading materials and books.  Once a college course is completed, these books have little trade-in value and students often have no use for the books.  My bill will create a Council consisting of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, University of Minnesota and other non-profit Minnesota universities such as Hamline and St. Thomas.  The council will find, use and customize open textbook educational resources that can be used across the state.  The end result will be free textbooks and learning materials for college students and faculty in Minnesota.

Please feel free to get in touch with my office as we move through the legislative session.  Your input will help me to better represent St. Cloud.  I can be reached by phone at (651) 296-6612 or by email at rep.zachary.dorholt@house.mn.

Sincerely,

Zach Dorholt
