Don't stock Gull with muskies

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

To the editor,

Having been on Gull Lake since 1973, I share the opinion with the many area residents who do not want another invasive species – muskies – introduced into the lake.

The DNR is considering stocking muskies in a number of Minnesota lakes and the Gull Chain of Lakes is on its list of candidates. Strong public opposition among those who live on the lake has been expressed. A recent survey of Gull Chain lakeshore property owners conducted by the lake's association indicates 70 percent are against stocking muskies in the lake.

That should carry weight with the DNR, but the local public's opinion seems to be falling on deaf ears at the agency. It is unfortunate that Gull Lake people I have communicated with on this matter indicate they are tired of being bullied by the DNR on this issue and others.

I am working closely with this subject in the House and look for a legislative hearing to take place during the 2016 session to further examine this issue. A hearing at the Capitol would allow local citizens to again voice their concerns – especially regarding damage aggressive muskies could cause to the populations of other fish that already exist in Gull.

Let's hope the DNR takes these opinions to heart so the state can start work for local taxpayers instead of thrusting its bureaucratic will on the people who live here and care deeply about the chain of lakes.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mark Anderson
