House DFL Bonding Bill Includes $5 Million for Range Regional Airport Improvements

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives Capital Investment Committee unveiled a bonding proposal designed to create jobs by investing in public works projects across Minnesota.

The $800 million package includes a proposal from Rep. Carly Melin (DFL—Hibbing) to appropriate $5 million for much-needed improvements to the Chisholm-Hibbing Range Regional Airport.

“This project not only puts people back to work, but also provides better access for industry and business in our region,” said Rep. Melin. “The airport is a key engine of economic growth in the Iron Range. I’m thrilled that our bonding bill includes funding for this project. It’s a big priority for me as well as residents and businesses in our region.”

Last month, Rep. Melin presented her proposal to the House Transportation Finance Committee. She was joined by Shaun Germolus, the airport’s executive director. At the time, Germolus explained that the airport has experienced a 30 percent increase in passenger boarding since 2009, noting that the facility, which was built in 1978, needed to expand capacity and improve safety.

“The Iron Range’s regional airline passenger traffic has grown faster than expected and is forecasted to continually increase,” said Germolus. “We have designed a terminal facility addressing these needs while being fiscally responsible in the process. We are extremely pleased the terminal expansion project is considered under this bonding bill, as it will enable us to construct sooner as opposed to waiting another 2-4 years under traditional funding.”

The $5 million appropriation in the House DFL bonding proposal would pay for improvements such as a larger passenger boarding area, passenger screening checkpoint, baggage claim area and more.

The proposed bonding bill awaits a vote in the House Capital Investment Committee.
