2013 Legislative Session

Friday, January 18, 2013

Friends and Neighbors,

The 2013 Legislative Session convened last week. I am proud and privileged to once again represent Blaine at the State Capitol, and I plan to continue the good work that has been accomplished over the last two years.

Comparing Minnesota’s economic situation in 2011 to our status today, we can see a significant improvement in our state’s overall well-being.

2011

2012-2013

2014-15

-$6.2 billion deficit

(Fall 2010)

+$2.5 billion surplus

(Projected for ‘12-13)

The projected $4.4 billion shortfall for the biennium was significantly improved and is now only $1.1 billion.

7% unemployment

5.5% unemployment

(As of 12/12)

(National: 7.8%)

55,000 jobs created in 2012

61,000 new businesses registered in 2012

Government spending set to grow by 22%

(180% over the decade)

Spending slowed, set at a sustainable 6%

Monthly collections have consistently exceeded projections. State spending slows, economy grows.

Without raising taxes in 2011-2012, tax collections are projected to increase by $1.7 billion under the existing budget.

We are on the right path. These are the results of creating a common sense government that works efficiently for the people of Minnesota. I will have the opportunity to continue to promote smart policy initiatives as GOP Lead of the Elections committee and member to the Commerce, Government Operations, and Rules committees.

I am confident that both sides of the aisle can work together in the best interest of the middle class, small business, and entrepreneurs—the engine that drives our economy.

My door is always open to the people and priorities of Blaine. Please contact me at any time regarding matters of state government. You can locate my contact information on the left-hand side of this email, or feel free to follow me on Twitter. I also welcome any questions you may have for a new, bi-weekly video “Q&A” segment. Have a great weekend,

Tim
